Special Feature:   Car Warranty Scams Target Seniors

From ConsumerAffairs.Com

You pick up the mail and there’s a postcard warning your car’s warranty is about to expire. It urges you to call a toll-free number to renew it. But be careful – these warnings are often just a clever scam.

“These offers target seniors and other car owners with post cards and phone calls that sound urgent,” said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, whose office is investigating the post cards and calls. “They want to pressure you into buying an expensive car warranty. Don’t let a high-pressure sales pitch talk you into something you don’t want or need.”

Question:  File Preview

I love your emails; you give us so many helpful hints and computer tricks.  Here’s one for you, I don’t know if this is possible or not.  When I’m opening a file in Microsoft Word, there are so many on the list.  Can I get a preview of a file without having to open each and everyone until I find the one I’m looking for?

Answer:
Yes, you can preview the files.

Click File on the menu and then Open.  In the Open window that you now see, take a look at the toolbar across the top of the window, to the right of the Look in location.  You will see several buttons; look for the Views button.

Click the small down arrow to the immediate right of the Views button.  A list will drop down; click Preview.

The area in the window where your files are listed will split into two panes.  The one on the left will have a list of all your files; click on a file and you will see a preview of that file in the right pane.

To return to the view you had before, click the small down arrow to the immediate right of the Views button.  A list will drop down; click to select the view you were using previously.

Today's Topic:  Windows Vista Flip

In previous versions of Windows, holding down the Alt key on the keyboard and then pressing and releasing the Tab key would open a window that listed each currently open program.  You could click on the program you wanted, bringing it to the front of all the other open windows.

In Windows Vista, the same keystrokes will display thumbnails (small pictures) of the currently open windows and the Desktop.  To select the program you want, either click on the thumbnail with the mouse, or hold down the Alt key and keep pressing the Tab key until the program you want is highlighted.  Select the Desktop and all windows will be minimized.

Windows Flip 3D is a similar feature and possibly more useful, since it displays a much larger picture of each open window.  To use it, hold down the Windows Logo key (this has the Windows flag on it; usually located on the bottom left of the keyboard between the Ctrl and Alt keys).  Press and release the Tab key.  This displays all the open windows in a 3-dimensional stack.  To select the program you want, either click on the window with the mouse, or, with the Windows Logo key held down, press the Tab key until the window you want is at the front of the stack.

Windows Flip and Flip 3D are very helpful features of Windows Vista, useful for anyone who works with many open windows, or even just to quickly view the Desktop.

Question:  Email Read Receipts

On some emails I send out, I would like to know if and when they have been received and read.  Is this at all possible?

Answer:
If you use Outlook Express, it is.  Following are the steps for setting up this feature.

Set up a read receipt for a single email:  Open Outlook Express. Open a new email window as usual.  Click Tools on the menu and then click Request Read Receipt.  Send the email as usual.  When the email is received and read, you will receive a message in your inbox.

Set up read receipts for every email sent:  Open Outlook Express.  Click Tools on the menu and then click Options.  Click on the Receipts tab.  Click to place a checkmark in the box next to ‘Request a return receipt for all sent messages.’  Click the OK button.  You will receive a message when each of your emails have been received and read.

Note:  This feature is not available in web-based email programs such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL.
