Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

There are many ways to delete a file or folder. Windows gives you lots of options for how you want to do any task. Try any one of these next time you want to delete a file or folder.

-- Right-click the file or folder, and then left click Delete from the resulting menu.

-- Click once on the file or folder to select it, and then press the Delete key.

-- If you are in Windows Explorer or My Computer, click once on the file or folder to select it. Click File on the menu, and then click Delete.

-- Drag the file or folder to the Recycle Bin on the desktop.

Today's Topic:   Remove Programs from Start Button Menu

I deleted several programs that I never used. I used add/remove programs which took care of them.  They are still showing up when you click on start and then on programs.  How can I get them to disappear completely.

Answer:
Click on the Start button and point to Programs.  Find the item you want to delete and right click on it.  From the resulting menu, left click on Delete.  A dialog box will appear confirming that you want to send the item to the Recycle Bin; left click on Yes.

Note:  This step should be done only after the program is uninstalled with either the programs uninstall feature or Windows Add/Remove Programs.

Question:   Creating Icons

Can you help me?  I use the Paint program a lot to create little designs for the signs I do for our clubhouse.  There must be an easy way to open it then clicking on Start and then Programs and then Accessories and then Paint.  That seems so long.  Is there?

Answer:
Yes, there is.  You can create an icon on your desktop.  Then, all you have to do is double click on it and the program will start right up.

To do so, go to Paint in the Start button menu like you usually do.  Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Paint.  Do not click Paint, because you do not want to open it right now.

Hold down the right mouse button and drag Paint to the desktop.  Release the button.  You will now see a small menu with several choices.  Left click on Copy Here.

That will create an icon for Paint, and you will still be able to open it by going through the Start button menu.

This process can be used to create an icon for any program that is in your Start button menu.

Question:  Lock the Taskbar

I always accidentally move the Start button to the top or side of my computer screen.  Can I permanently attach it to the bottom of the screen?

Answer:
Yes, you can lock the taskbar. But only if you are using Windows ME or XP.

Windows ME
Right click on the Taskbar
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
In the bottom window, scroll to the bottom
In the Taskbar section, uncheck Enable moving and resizing

Windows XP
Right click on the Taskbar
Left click on Lock the Taskbar
