Using Links
A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to many worthwhile, informative and fun websites. Here are the instructions on how to use links:
A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.
If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your screen.
If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser. Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up. Open your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet Explorer); click on the address bar. Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Paste from the menu that you just opened up. Press the Enter key on the keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature: America Online - Problems in an Instant Message
If you use America Online, occasionally you might be bothered by someone you don’t know sending you an instant message.
Offensive Instant Message senders bother you for one of two reasons: there are scammers who want your account information or credit card number, and then there are those people who are just plain offensive and want to be annoying.
NEVER ever give out your password, account information or credit card number to anyone asking for it in an instant message or in an email. America Online will never ask you for this information; if you are asked, you can rest assured that it is someone trying to scam you.
If you receive an instant message from a screen name that you don’t recognize, simply close the IM window. You don’t even have to answer them.
If the person continues to annoy you with Instant Messages, you can report them to America Online by clicking the Notify AOL button at the bottom of the message window.

Tips & Tricks: Spam Fighting Tip
Here’s one way to reduce the amount of junk email you receive:
Create different e-mail addresses for different online activities. Use one for emailing with family and friends and don’t give it out anywhere else online. Use another one for shopping online, another if you post on message boards or visit chat rooms, and another for websites that require you to register to use the site or get information from it.
If you shop online for example, you can make your purchase and then check the email for the address you use to shop. Find and print the email that you just received confirming your purchase and then delete any other email that might be there. You don’t even have to look at them because you know that they’re not from family or friends.
You should then get a minimum amount of junk email at your main email address.
You can create as many email addresses, free, at websites such as yahoo, hotmail or lycos. The AOL service offers its members the option to create up to 7 screen names.

Question: Restore Volume Control Icon
I lost the speaker on my computer – you know that icon next to the clock that lets you turn the volume higher or lower. My computer I very loud now, please help.
Answer: The speaker icon resides in the system tray on the taskbar. The system tray is the area on the right side of the taskbar next to the clock. A click on the speaker icon lets you turn the volume up or down quickly and easily.
To place the volume control icon back next to the clock, follow these steps: Open Control Panel from the Start menu. Click the Sounds Speech and Audio Devices icon. (Or, depending how your Control Panel is set up, click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.) Click Adjust the system volume. Click to put a check in the box marked Place volume icon in the taskbar. Click the OK button, and the little Speaker icon appears next to the clock.

Today's Topic: Bookmarks in Microsoft Word
I’m writing a book and am up to Chapter 15. I have two problems, both having to do with moving around in my book. 1. I’d like to quickly move to certain chapters to do some editing in that chapter. 2. when I open it, to continue writing I have to scroll all the way to the end to pick up where I left off. Can you help me learn how to quickly move where I want to be?
Answer: Bookmarks and keyboard shortcuts can be used to move around quickly in your document.
You can set bookmarks that will take you to the beginning of each chapter.
To set a bookmark, go to the beginning of a chapter, click Insert on the menu bar and then click on Bookmark. Give your bookmark a name like Chapter1 (Spaces are not allowed in a bookmark name) and click Add.
Once your bookmarks are set, to go to a chapter, click on Edit in the menu bar, then click Go To. In the Go to what list, click to select bookmark and you will see a list of your bookmarks. Select the chapter you want to work on and you will be taken to that chapter.
To quickly move to the end of your book, you can use a very handy keyboard shortcut. Hold down the CTRL key with one hand and press the End key with the other. That will move the insertion point (flashing vertical line) immediately past the last character of your document.
Alternatively, to move all the way back to the beginning of your document, use CTRL Home.
Internet Bookmarks, also known as Favorites, are a little different from bookmarks in a word processing document. To learn more about Internet bookmarks, visit our website: http://stsico.com/html/bookmarks.html

Tips & Tricks: Highlighting Text
Here are some text selecting tips that work in Notepad, WordPad, Word, most word processing programs and many email programs. Not every tip will work in every program but give them a try in yours.
To highlight a single word, point at it with the mouse and double-click. You will see that the word turns black; that is what highlight looks like.
In some programs, you can hold down the left mouse button after the second click and then, by moving the mouse around, you can quickly highlight additional text word by word.
To highlight a single line, click next to it in the left margin. Keep holding down the mouse button and move the mouse up or down to highlight additional text line by line.
To highlight a paragraph, double-click next to it in the left margin. Keep holding down the mouse button on the second click and move the mouse to highlight additional text paragraph by paragraph.
To highlight an entire document, hold down the Ctrl key and click anywhere in the left margin.
