Special Feature:   Daylight Savings Time

Don’t forget to change your clock today.

“Spring springs ahead; fall falls back”

This year, Daylight Savings Time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November.

Electronics that use an internal clock, such as computers, VCRs, DVD Recorders may be affected.  If your VCR or DVD has an option for Automatic Daylight Savings Time, you may have to turn that off and change the clock manually.  If you forget to turn off the Automatic Daylight Savings Time, it may change itself again at the old Daylight Savings Time change.

If your computer has the latest version of Windows, Vista, the new Daylight Savings Time information is already programmed into it.  If you have an older computer, take a look at the Microsoft website for help on the time change:

Today's Topic:   Internet Explorer 7 Menus

Question:  I just downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer, number 7.  I cannot find the menus.  Did I do something wrong?

Answer:
No, you did not.  They are hidden in the new version of IE.  You can get to them though.

If you want to get to the menu temporarily, press the Alt key on the keyboard.  The menu will appear and you can choose your command as usual.

If you would like the menu permanently displayed, press the Alt key to see the menu.  Then click View on the menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Menu bar.   Now the menu will always be there and available for you to use.

If you ever want to hide the menu bar again, click View on the menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Menu bar.

Question:   Missing Website Graphics

On the Internet, I frequently encounter links that I click on and all I see is a blank page with a small square in the upper left corner that has a small red x in it.  What is this?

Answer:
Sometimes clicking the Refresh or Reload button on the toolbar will display the picture.  If not, what you are looking at is a web page that is supposed to have a picture in that square, but the picture file is not available.

When a web page is created, saved and put on the Internet, the page is a text file.  When the creator of the webpage wants a picture to display on the webpage, he or she puts a link in the text that points to the picture file.  When someone opens that webpage, there is an instruction in there to open the picture file, too, and display the picture on the webpage.

So the webpage is actually made up of two files:  the text file and the picture file.

In the case of the webpage you see that only displays the small red x, the picture file is no longer available.  That means that the text file is still on the internet, but the file with the picture was probably deleted.
