Today's Featured Website: Manhattan Addresses
Whether you live in New York City or just visit once in a while, one thing's for sure: tracking down an address can be tough. Determining the cross street given an avenue number involves some mathematical calculations, and you'll get even more confused when you head downtown and find yourself off the grid on the named streets of Greenwich Village, SoHo, and the Financial District.
That's where the Manhattan Address Locator comes in--type in the address, and you'll find the cross street as well as the nearest subway stop. You can also do a reverse lookup if you know the street number and determine the area of town and subway stops for the named streets, too. http://www.manhattanaddress.com/

Today's Featured Computer Term: Drag and Drop
Drag and Drop describes applications that allow you to drag objects to specific locations on the screen to perform actions on them. For example, in Windows, you can drag a document to the recycle bin icon to delete it. This is called drag-and-drop functionality. Drag-and-drop functionality is both faster and easier than alternatives such as selecting options from a menu or typing in commands.
Most newer operating systems, including Windows and the Mac, even allow you to drag and drop between applications. You can, for example, create a picture with a draw program, select it, and then drag it into a document that you are editing with a word processor.

Today's Topic: Applying Formatting To Words
The general way you accomplish tasks in Microsoft Word is to select the text on which you want to perform an action, and then perform the action. For instance, if you wanted to make a text selection bold, you would first select the text, and then click on the bold Button on the Formatting toolbar.
There is one exception to this rule, however. If you want to apply formatting to a single word in your document, you don't need to first select the word. All you need to do is make sure the insertion point is located within the word. To test this out, follow these steps:
1. Position the insertion point within a word in your document. 2. Click on the Bold button on the Formatting toolbar. The entire word should be changed to bold type. 3. Click on the Underline button on the Formatting toolbar. The entire word should become underlined, and the Underline button on the Formatting toolbar is automatically selected. 4. Click on the Undo button. The formatting of the word returns to its default setting.
You can try this out with any character formatting. It even works if you position the insertion point in a word and choose the Font option from the Format menu. Any changes you make in the dialog box are automatically applied to the entire word.

Progressive Learning Series: Buying a Printer
Which printer should you choose, laser or ink jet?
Ink jets generally cost less, can print in color, and most can produce beautiful graphics. You can purchase specially coated ink jet paper to make your pictures print with high photographic quality. It's also easier to find portable ink jet printers.
On the downside, ink jets are usually much slower and are considerably more expensive to operate. You'll spend more on ink than you would on laser toner. Some inkjets will only print on special inkjet paper, which is usually more expensive than regular printer paper. Because of the inkjet technology (ink is sprayed onto the paper), text does not have a crisp, defined look.
If you prefer speed and smoother text quality, a laser printer may be the choice for you. Replacement toner cartridges will cost less to purchase, as will paper. Laser printers, however, are usually more expensive, and the price tags on the color lasers are generally way above what the home user wants to spend. |
