Today's Featured Computer Term: Footprint
It never fails. Even if you have the world's largest desk, eventually you run out of space for your computer and all of its components. How much space is your computer case taking up, anyway? What about your printer? Your scanner? The space a peripheral occupies is its "footprint." The larger the item, the larger the footprint. If you work in an environment where space is at a premium, you should look for equipment with a small footprint the next time you go shopping.
Within the operating system, a memory footprint refers to the amount of RAM (random access memory) any given program uses when loaded.
Footprint can also refer to the amount of disk space required by an application.

Today's Topic: Printing Part of the Screen
You want to print two paragraphs in that email you just received; you hit the print button and 45 pages start shooting out of the printer. If you want to print part of what you're looking at on your screen, rather than the whole thing, highlight the portion you want to print, click on File to open the File menu, then click on Print.
There's an area of the dialog which will say Print What or Print Range. In there, on of the options will be Selection, click on that. Click Print to print the selection.

Progressive Learning Series:
Little Printer Big Footprint
Carefully look at a printer's dimensions and design before you buy. Most of the smaller ones use L-shaped paper paths, where the paper is loaded vertically and ejected horizontally. Such designs demand as much as half a foot of space above the printer, and up to a foot of space in front - wouldn't work if you want to put the printer on a shelf, or you have a cluttered desk. Some larger printers actually use less space, depending on the input and output designs. |
