Special Feature:   New IRS Scams

The following is from scambusters.org

It didn't take long for criminals to come up with new IRS scams to cash in on the government's $170 billion stimulus package with tax refunds to boost the economy.

Even before Congress signed off on the proposal, tax scammers were phoning people, asking for their bank details so the IRS could supposedly deposit refunds directly into their accounts.

They bait their victims by suggesting this will mean a faster than expected refund, and they sometimes warn that if you don't give the information immediately, you could lose your refund.

This IRS scam enables con artists to get bank account and Social Security numbers, as well as credit and debit card details that they then use for identity theft.

In fact, as we've said before, the Internal Revenue Service never, repeat never, asks for taxpayers' personal information over the phone -- or in emails. That's not how it does business.

Tips & Tricks:   Alphabetize the Start Menu

Question:  Can the Start menu be put in alphabetical order?  There are so many programs in there, if they were alphabetized it would make it much easier to find what I’m looking for.

Answer:
Click the Start button or Start Orb and point to Programs or All Programs (depending on your version of Windows). Point to any program in the programs list and right click on it. From the resulting menu, left click Sort by Name. All your programs will now be listed alphabetically.

Today's Topic:  Attaching a File to an Email – America Online

To attach a file to an email in America Online, open the program and sign on to your account as usual.

Once you are in your Mailbox, click the Write button on the toolbar.  This will open a Write Mail window.

Click Attachments.  This will open the Attachments window; click the Attach button.

You will now see a dialog box with the list of folders and files on your computer.  Look for and open the folder that contains the file you want to attach to your email.  When you find the file, double click it to select it and attach it to your email.

If you want to attach another file to the email, click the Attach button again and follow the above steps.

When you have attached all the files you’d like to send, click the OK button.

The email window will now be on the screen. Create your email as usual. When you are done, click the Send button as usual.  The email, along with your attached files, will be sent to the recipient.

Note:  The above steps apply to attaching a file to an email in the AOL program, NOT aol.com in a browser.  Watch upcoming editions of this newsletter to learn how to attach files using aol.com in a browser.

Question:  Copying and Researching Error Messages

When an error message appears in a window, is it possible to copy it without having to type the entire message?  I like to open Google and look up any error message I get, so I can see what caused the problem.  Having to retype some of these lengthy messages can be very time consuming and easy to make a mistake.  I appreciate any suggestions you can give.

Answer:
Yes, you can copy and paste the error message.  When the window with the error message opens, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard, and press and release the c key.

Open WordPad (the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, click WordPad).

Click Edit on the menu and then click Paste. The error message will be displayed.  You can now copy it (highlight the error message; click Edit on the menu, and then click Copy), open your Browser, navigate to Google, and paste the error message in the Search box (click in the Search box, click Edit on the menu, then click Paste).

Press Enter and you should get search results for the error message.
