Special Feature:   Email Address Favorite

If you frequently send websites to friends, you will appreciate this tip.  You can put an email address into your Internet Explorer Favorites menu.  This way, when you want to send a website to that person, you don’t have to open your email program; all you have to do is click on the Favorite.

Here’s how:

Open the Favorites menu and click Add to Favorites.  In the Add Favorite window that you now see, remove whatever is in the Name box and type in the name of the person whose email address you are going to set up.  Click the OK button.

Now, we adjust the favorite so it points to the e-mail address and not to a web page. If the Favorites menu is not displayed, open it.  Find the Favorite you just added and right-click on it. Left click on Properties in the resulting menu.

The Properties window will open.  Remove whatever is in the URL box.   Type in mailto: followed by your friend’s email address (no spaces).  Click OK.

When you click on the Favorite, Outlook will open. a new email window will display with your friend’s address already typed in – all you have to do is write your email and send it.

Tips & Tricks:    Quick Save

There's nothing worse than losing work if your computer goes down or you click the wrong button.

In most programs, Ctrl+S will save the document you are working on. Hold down the CTRL key and press s.  It’s quicker than reaching for the mouse and clicking the Save command.

Get in the habit of frequently saving your work.  It can save you a lot of headaches.

Today's Topic:   Windows XP Account Picture

Question:  When I open the Start menu, there is a picture of a rubber duck at the top.  My grandson told me how to change it but I did not understand what he said.  Could you tell me how?  Thank you so much.  You are so much better than my grandson at explaining things.

Answer:
Click the Start button and open Control Panel.  Click User Accounts. Click to select your account and then click Change your picture.

This will open a window with about two dozen pictures to choose from. If you see one you like, click to select it and then click the Change Picture button.

If you would rather use one of your own pictures, click the magnifying glass that says Browse for more pictures. This will open up the My Pictures folder. If you have pictures in there, click the picture you would like to use. Click the Open button and your account picture will be changed to the selected picture.

If your pictures are kept in a different folder, maneuver to that folder.

Question:   Scan Disk and Error Checking

My old Windows 98 computer had a feature called Scan Disc that I used periodically to check for errors and fix bad spots on the hard disk.  I can not find it on my new Windows XP computer.  It can’t be that this feature was removed, can it?

Answer:
No, it’s still there.  The name was changed to Error Checking.

Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. Right click on the C drive.  From the resulting menu, left click on Properties. Click the Tools tab.

You will see the Error Checking section.  Click the Check Now button.  Choose the Check Disk options that you want and click the Start button.

Question:   Email Search

I get a lot of email from my children and grandchildren and I keep all of it.  The problem occurs when I want to find something someone sent me and I don’t remember which email it was in.  Is there a way to quickly search through emails to find what I’m looking for?

Answer:
Yes, there is.

Outlook
Click the Find button on the Standard Buttons toolbar. (If you don’t see this toolbar, click View on the menu, and then Layout.  Click Toolbar and then OK)

In the Find Message window that you now see, you can set up a search through your email.  You’ll be able to search by sender, recipient (for those emails that were sent to you and other people), subject line, message, date and attachment.  Just click in the box that you want to search by and type in keywords that you are looking for.

America Online 9.0
Click the Search Mail tab at the top of the Mailbox window.

Choose what you would like to search by:  Email Address and/or Subject.  Click in the For: box and type in the email address or text to search for.  Click the Search button.
