Special Feature:  Identity Theft on the Internet – Protect Yourself

Tip #2  Beware of Phishing Attempts

Phishers pretend to be someone else and then ask you to confirm your personal information.

A phishing attempt usually starts with an email that is made up to look like it genuinely comes from a bank, business or some other organization.  Phishers will send this email to hundreds and maybe even thousands of email addresses.  Their hope is that some of these emails will reach recipients who just happen to do business with the organization they’re pretending to be.

In the email, they claim to need the recipient to confirm personal information.  In some cases, there may be threats to close accounts, stop services or other consequences.  A very popular phishing attempt is one where the email looks like it came from the Motor Vehicles Department, telling the recipient that they were filmed running a red light, a warrant is out for their arrest, and they had to reply to that email with their credit card information in order to pay the summons and close the case.  Many people responded.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself.  First of all, never open an email from a sender you don’t know.  If you do receive an email which looks like it comes from a familiar organization, immediately close the email and contact the organization by phone or mail.  Make sure you don’t use a phone number or address that was provided in the email you received.

Tips & Tricks:   Windows Vista - Putting Files on a CD

Question:  My computer has Windows Vista on it.  How do I copy files to a CD?

Answer:
It’s much easier in Vista than it ever was before, in any previous Windows version.

Put the CD in the drive.  The AutoPlay window will open; click on Burn files to disc using Windows.  In the next window that displays, you can name your CD if you like.  Click in the box next to Disc Title, erase whatever text is in there, and type the name of your CD.  Click the Next button when you’re done.

A window will display with a list of drives and folders in the pane on the left and a large blank area on the right.  Find the files you want to put on the CD and drag them into that blank area.   When you are done, right click on the CD/DVD drive in the left pane (if you can’t see it, double click on Computer).  A menu will open; left click on Eject.  Windows will close the session and open the drive.  Remove the disk and you’re done.

Today's Topic:   Attaching a File to an Email – Gmail

To attach a file to an email in Gmail, open the program and sign on to your account as usual.

Once you are in your Mailbox, click the Compose Mail link on the left.  This will open a Compose Mail window.

Click the Attach a File link which is found right under the Subject line.  This will display a text box; click the Browse button.

You will now see a dialog box with the list of folders and files on your computer.  Look for and open the folder that contains the file you want to attach to your email.  When you find the file, double click it to select it and attach it to your email.

If you want to attach another file to the email, click the Attach a File link again and follow the above steps.

When you have attached all the files you’d like to send, write your email as usual. When you are done, click the Send button as usual.  The email, along with your attached files, will be sent to the recipient.

Please watch upcoming editions of this newsletter to learn how to attach files in other email programs.

Question:   The Speaker Icon

I liked last week’s article about turning off system sounds while continuing to listen to music.  I would like to do that on my computer but I don’t have the speaker icon by the clock.  Can you help?

Answer:
You can put the speaker icon back in the system tray.  Here are the steps:

Windows XP

Click the Start button and open Control Panel.  Click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices.  click on Sounds and Audio Devices.  A window will open; click on the Volume tab on the top.  In the Device volume section, click to place a checkmark in the box next to Place volume control icon in the taskbar.  Close the window.

Windows Vista

Right click on the taskbar.  Click Properties.  The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window will open; click the Notification Area tab at the top.  In the System icons area, click to place a checkmark in the box next to Volume.  Click the OK button.
