Special Feature:   Favorite Web Pages at Startup

Question:  There are several websites that I look at every time I turn on my computer.  I know it is possible to have them open automatically as soon as I turn on the computer, because my grandson does this.  But he tells me it is too complicated for me.  Could you tell me how to do this?

Answer:
Yes, it is possible to do this.  It is not so complicated, but you have to have good control of the mouse.

You are going to put a shortcut to the website into the Startup folder on the Start menu.  Take a look at this folder:  click the Start button, point to Programs and then point to Startup.  Whatever is in that menu will open automatically when you turn the computer on.  If there is a program that you use every time you turn on the computer, you can put a shortcut for it in this folder; then it will save you the steps of opening it when you want to use it.

To put a shortcut to your favorite website in the Startup folder, follow these steps:

open Internet Explorer and go to the page you want to go to when your computer starts.

Point to the little e to the left of the website address in the address bar.  Hold down the left mouse button and drag it to the Start button. Do not release the mouse button yet, just hold it over the Start button for a couple of seconds. The Start menu should open.

Now, point to the Programs menu. The Programs menu should open.

Still holding down the mouse button, move your mouse to the Startup folder. Again, point to it for a second and it should open up. Move the mouse into the menu that appears when you point to Startup; release the mouse button.  This will drop the shortcut into it and you are done.   You will see the website listed in that menu.

Note:  This tip works better with Internet connections that are always on, such as Optimum Online or DSL.  When Windows starts, you are already online; Internet Explorer will open with your website displayed.

Tips & Tricks:  Delete Favorites

Question:  I have too many favorites listed.  Some websites do not even exist anymore.  How can I get rid of them?

Answer:
Point to the favorite you want to get rid of, right click on it and then left click on Delete in the menu you now see.  Left click on the Yes button in the Confirm File Delete window that you now see.  The Favorite will be removed from the list and sent to the Recycle Bin.

Tips & Tricks:  Restore Volume Icon

Question:  I lost the volume icon that is by the clock.  How can I get it back?

Answer:
Click the Start button and open Control Panel.  open Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices.  click on Sounds and Audio Devices.  The Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window will open the Volume tab.  In the Device volume section, click to place a checkmark in the box to the left of Place volume control icon in the taskbar.  Click the OK button and close Control Panel.  You should now see the volume icon by the clock.

Tips & Tricks:  Open Multiple Programs

I love this newsletter for all the great tips I get.  I would like to know if you have a shortcut for me.  When I sit down at my computer, I open several programs right at the beginning.  Is there a shortcut to open all of the programs I want without having to go back into the start menu each time?

Answer:
Yes, there is.  Click Start and point to Programs like you usually do.  Hold down the Shift key and click on the program you want to open.  That program will open, but the menu will remain open.  Keep the Shift pressed and click the next program you want to open.  Keep Shift pressed and open as many programs as you want.  When you are done, click out of the menu.

Today's Topic:   Email Address Book Contacts and Groups

Question:  I send email to my children and grandchildren.  Would you tell me how to put their email addresses in my address book so I do not have to type the addresses each time?

Question:  I have a group of friends that I would like to send the same email to.  Can I do this all at once instead of typing in each address?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  You have to put each persons email address in your address book and then set up a Group.  Here are the steps for Outlook Express.  Most address books will be similar.

First, put the individual people in your address book.  To do so, click on Contacts on the left side of your screen, and then click on New Contact.  (If Contacts does not appear on the left side of your screen, click on View on the menu bar and then click on Layout.  This will display the Window Layout Properties box.  In the Basic area, click Contacts and then the OK button.)

When you have clicked on Contact and then New Contact, you will see the Properties window where you can enter information about your contact.  Enter the contacts name and e-mail address in the appropriate boxes.  Click the Add button and then click the OK
button.  This will save your new contact. Repeat these steps for each new contact.

Once you have entered all your contacts, you can create the group.

Click on Tools in the menu bar and then click on Address Book.  In the Address Book window, click on the New button, and then click New Group from the resulting menu.

A Properties window will appear.  Type a name for your group and then click on the Select Members button.  In the Select Group Members window that is now displayed, click on the name of the first group contact that you would like to add to this group and then click on the Select button.  That contact will be added to the Members section on the right side of the window. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have all your group members in the Members section on the right.  Click the OK button in this window and click OK again in the group window. Click the X button to close the address book.

In the Outlook Express window, the group will be listed with your other contacts.  To send an e-mail to the group, just double click on the group name under Contacts and a new -mail will open already addressed to the group.
