Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to many worthwhile, informative and fun websites. Here are the instructions on how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser. Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up. Open your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet Explorer); click on the address bar. Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Paste from the menu that you just opened up. Press the Enter key on the keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature: Selecting Tabs in Dialog Boxes

Many dialog boxes utilize the concept of tabs. These look like index cards within the dialog box, and are used to organize what could otherwise be a very cluttered presentation of information. A good example of a dialog box that uses tabs is the Desktop Properties. To take a look, right click on the desktop; left click on Properties from the resulting menu. You’ll see Screensaver, Appearance, Settings and possibly several others depending on your version of Windows.

If you want to move from one tab to another, the typical way of doing this is by using the mouse -click on the tab you want. You can, instead, use the keyboard. To move forward through the available tabs, simply press Ctrl+Tab. To move backwards, use Shift+Ctrl+Tab.

Today's Topic:   Deleting Cookies

Question: How do you know which cookies to keep and which to delete? This newsletter is terrific! I’m learning so much from it.

Answer:
You can delete all the cookies if you want. The only thing they do is hold information about your activities and account information with a particular website.

For example if you frequently shop at a specific website, a cookie from this website identifies you and will include your name and items you might be interested in when you visit their website.

If you delete this cookie, the website will show you a generic page and you will have to log in each time using your username and password before you can access your account with them. When you order, you may also have to manually type in your name, address, and any other necessary information that the cookie would put in for you.

To delete all the cookies, go to Control Panel (Click Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel) and open Internet Options. On the General tab, click on the button that says Delete Cookies.

If you’re using Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel. Click Network and Internet Connections. Click Internet Options. On the General tab, click on the button that says Delete Cookies.

Question: Internet Explorer Address Bar

Question: I used to have an area at the top of Internet Explorer where I could type in web sites that I wanted to visit. It is not there anymore. How do I get it back?

Answer:
It sounds like you have accidentally closed your address bar in Internet Explorer. Here’s how you can get it back:

Open Internet Explorer. Click on View in the menu bar, and point to Toolbars. In the submenu of Toolbars you will see Address bar; click on it.

The address bar should now be back on your Internet Explorer window.

Progressive Learning Series: Microsoft Word Tips and Tricks

Quickly Displaying the Page Setup Dialog Box

When you are working in Page or Print Layout view, Word provides a quick way to access the Page Setup dialog box, where you can change margins, paper size and more. To access the Page Setup dialog box, point to the gray portions of the rulers (either horizontal or vertical) and double-click. You then see the Page Setup dialog box where you can make your changes.

For more information and a graphical explanation about the Page Setup dialog box, changing margins, paper size and more, visit our website: http://stsico.com/html/word8.html

Finding Related or Replacement Words with Thesaurus

The thesaurus is one of the many tools that Word. You can use this to find alternate words with the same meaning (synonyms) or words with the opposite meaning (antonyms)

To use the thesaurus, position the insertion point in the word you want to change, click Tools on the menu bar and click on Thesaurus (in Word XP, click Tools, Language, Thesaurus).

The Thesaurus dialog box will then be displayed where you will see word meanings in the left pane and synonyms in the right pane. To replace the word you selected in your document, click on the word you want, and click the Replace button.

Using Symbols

If you ever have a need to use characters other than standard letters, numbers or punctuation marks, Word has just about every symbol available. For example, trademark and copyright symbols, letters with accents, and many other special characters can be found.

To do so, click Insert on the menu bar, and then click Symbol. You’ll see a grid with many different symbols; click on a symbol to enlarge it for a better look. If you don’t see the one you’re looking for, change the Font.

Click the down arrow to the right of the current font, and choose one of the other available fonts; you’ll see new symbols in the grid below. For other symbols, click the Special Characters tab at the top of the dialog box.

To use a symbol, click on it, click the Insert button, and click the Close button to return to your document.
