Special Feature:   Calculator

Instead of digging through your desk to find your calculator next time you need it, take a look at the Calculator program on your computer.

To open Calculator, click the Start button and point to Programs.  In the Programs menu that is now displayed, point to Accessories.  In the Accessories menu, click Calculator.

To enter numbers, you can either click on the numbers on the screen or type them in on your keyboard.

The plus (+), minus (-), multiply (x), division (/) and percent (%) signs are on the right.  You could use your keyboard to input these, if you would rather.  there is also a fraction (1/x) and square root (sqrt) button.

The Backspace button is there, in case you want to erase your last entry.

If you need to do more advanced calculations, you can switch to the Scientific Calculator.  Click View on the menu, and then click Scientific.  You will be able to work with number systems, statistical and geometric calculations, save numbers into memory and much more.

If you need help working the calculator, click Help on the menu and then click Help Topics.

Tips & Tricks:     On Screen Keyboard

If you ever have problems with your keyboard, you can display one on your screen.  This will allow you to finish up whatever you are working on, and then turn the computer off and back on to get your physical keyboard working again.

To display the keyboard, click Start on the menu and then Run.  Type osk in the Open box and then click the OK button.

To use the keyboard, click on the letter, number or symbol you want to input.  The character will display in the active program on your desktop.

To close the Keyboard window, click the X button.

Today's Topic:   Website Error Codes

Question:  I often get error codes when I use the Internet. What do they mean?

Answer:
When you try to access a website and get an error message instead, there are many reasons why this could be happening.  Here is a list and description of some of the most common error codes:

400 Bad Request. This usually results from an incorrect address.  The address might be incorrect or typed in wrong.  Check the address.

401 Unauthorized Request.  Some websites are not accessible to the public.  Type in an address of one of these websites, or click on a link to one, and this message will appear.

403 Forbidden. Similar to 401 Unauthorized Request, it may require a password or it may be blocked from your domain.

404 Not Found.  This is probably the most common error.  The webpage has been renamed or no longer exists.  Try doing a web search for it.

500 Internal Error. The website, or some component of it, is not working properly. Try again later.

503 Service Unavailable.  This usually occurs when too many people try to look at the website at the same time or there is some temporary problem with the site.  Try again later.
