Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature:   Closing Windows – Some Options

Question:  Sometimes I will have a window open and the X button will be off the side of the screen where I can not click on it.  How can I close the window?  Thank you for doing this email.  I always learn so much from it.

Answer:
You have several choices on how you can close the window.

Point to the title bar of the window – that is the blue bar across the top where you see the name of the window.  Drag the window to the left side of the screen.  Do that by holding the left mouse button down and moving the mouse towards the left.  Release the button when the window is positioned where you can see the X button.

Another option is this:  make sure the window you want to close is the active window.  To do so, click somewhere in the middle of the window; you’ll see the title bar is blue.  Hold down the Alt key and press and release the F4 key.  That closes the active window.

You can also right click on the windows taskbar button.  When you do so, you will see a menu with Close as one of the options; left click on Close.

Note:  when you want to close several windows quickly, you might find it easier to right click on the taskbar button, then left click on Close from the resulting menu.

Special Feature:   Using Internet History

Question:  I saw a Web page some time ago and, the other day, when I went back to find it I couldn't. Is there some way my computer knows where I have been, and can help me find pages I've visited before so I don't have to remember where they were?  Thank you.  This newsletter is such a help!

Answer:
You can use Internet Explorer history to find websites you have visited in the past.

You’ll see a History button on the toolbar.  If the button is not easily identifiable, rest our mouse pointer for a moment on each button until you see the History one.

Click it; you’ll see a pane on the side of the window which will display visited websites by day and week.  Click the day you think you visited it and search through all until you find the one you are looking for.  Click on it to go to the website.

Don’t forget that you can bookmark your favorite websites.  Visit our Newsletter Archives to learn how:

Tips & Tricks:     Saving Email

Question:  What is the best way to save an email?

Answer:
Open the email that you want to save, click on File on the menu and then Save As. You will now see the Save dialog box.

In the Save in box, click the down arrow to open the drop down list, and select the location where you want to save your emails. My Documents is a good place to save to..

Click in the File name box and type a name for the e-mail. Remember, filenames must be unique and should easily identify the file.  You might want to use the date and senders name.

In the Save as type field, which you will find right under the filename box, you can choose file type. Text files take up less space and can be read in any text program that you want to use, such as your favorite word processor.

Click the Save button.

Today's Topic:   Print Website Address

I really enjoy and look forward to your weekly emails. I hope you can help me.  I just got a new computer that I am mostly very happy with.  However, when I print web pages, it does not print the website address on the bottom of the page like my old computer did.  Can this be changed?

Answer:
Yes, it can.  You want to print what is called a footer on the page, and you want it to contain the website address.  This is an option in Internet Explorer where you have to input codes to tell the computer what you want to print.

To do so, click File on the menu and then Page Setup.

In the Header and Footer boxes, type in the code for the information you want printed.  The header prints at the top of every page and the footer prints at the bottom of every page.

Here are the codes:

To print the Page address (URL) type: &u
Date: &D
Time in 24-hour format: &T
Current page number: &p
Total number of pages: &P

Examples:

If you want the website address printed at the bottom of the page, click in the footer box and type &u.

If you want page numbers and the website address printed at the bottom of the page, click in the footer box and type &p&u.

If you want the date printed at the top of the page, click in the header box and type &D.

Question:   America Online – Change Password

My neighbor told me that I should periodically change my America Online password.  Is this true and how can I do it?

Answer:
It is a good idea to change passwords every now and then.  If someone gets your AOL password, they can use your email address to send junk email and you will get in trouble with America Online.

Never, ever give your password to someone.  Remember, America Online will never ask you for your password.  If you get an email or Instant Message from someone claiming they are from AOL and asking for your password, do NOT give it out!

To change your password, go to Keyword Password.  To do so, click in the address bar and type password; press the Enter key.

Click the Change Password button.  You will be prompted to input a new password.
