Special Feature:  Minimizing Spam

We are all bothered by junk email.  Unfortunately, due to the low cost of advertising through email, millions of these emails are out there.  Once a spammer gets your email address, you can expect to get 10 times, sometimes hundreds of times more junk emails than good emails.

How do you stop it?  It is not easy.  In many cases, you are signing yourself up for junk mail.  When you shop online, when you register at websites, virtually anywhere you input your email address, you may be signing up for spam if the recipient sells addresses to spammers.  You have to provide an email address when you shop though.  How else can they send you the confirmation email?  And there are some sites with information that you want and they demand an email address.

What can you do?   Create a freebie email address just for those things.  Go to yahoo.com and click on mail.  Follow the steps and create an account.  Use this address for shopping, registering and anywhere else.

Keep your main address and give it to no one except your friends and family.  But there is a problem with that, too.  Do you know someone who forwards absolutely everything that comes through their inbox?  That can be the source of the spam you get.  Look at a forwarded email; see all those email addresses in it?  Spammers are now finding forwarded emails, harvesting all of the addresses throughout the email and putting them on their address lists.

That means that you as well as all the other people who are getting these forwarded emails will probably soon be receiving a whole lot of junk!  It might be hard to ask your friend to stop forwarding everything to you, but you can suggest that they use BCC.  That means that your email address will be hidden from all the other addresses.  Here is how you do that (and you might want to send this article to any forwarders you know):

Click Forward in the email like you usually do.  Some email programs will have a BCC box.  If yours does, input all the emails address you want to send to in the BCC box.  If your email program does not have a BCC box, click in the CC or Copy to box, type an Open Parenthesis (Shift 9) input all the email addresses and then type a Close Parenthesis (Shift 0).  Input your own email address in the To box.  Send the email as usual.

Each recipient will receive the email but no other email addresses will display.  If the recipient decides to send it on, none of the other email addresses will go out with the email.

Question:  Desktop Auto Arrange

Question:  I have a problem with my computer. On the desktop, all the icons are on the left side all of a sudden.  I used to have them spread out.  When I try to move one, it moves, but then shoots back to the left again.  Can you help me solve this?

Answer:
You desktop settings have been changed to Auto Arrange.  This means that all the icons are lined up on the left side of the desktop.  You can change that; here are the steps:

Right click on a blank spot on the desktop. On the menu that you now see, point to Arrange Icons.  A menu will display with Auto Arrange selected.  Click on Auto Arrange to remove the checkmark.  The menu will close.

Now you should be able to move your icons wherever you want.
