Today's Featured Computer Term:    Read Only

Capable of being displayed, but not modified or deleted. All operating
systems allow you to protect objects (disks, files, directories) with a
read-only attribute that prevents other users from modifying the object.

Today's Topic:   The following is a question sent in by a list member:

I had a little computer problem recently that really boggled me. I was
working with graphics in Microsoft Word and the program repeatedly crashed on
me. I had to close word and start it up again. The problem I had was this:
when I went back into the file I was working on, it came up as Read-Only. It
wouldn't let me continue doing the editing work that I was trying to do.

Answer: There is a resolution to this problem: even though it looks like
Microsoft Word is closed, it may actually be running in the background
(computers can be pretty bizarre at times!).

This is a pretty common problem with Windows Me. Here's what you can do:
close all open programs and then press Ctrl+Alt+Del (hold down Ctrl and Alt;
press and release Delete). This brings up the Close Program dialog box in
which you can see which programs still occupy memory. Microsoft Word will
probably show up, which means it is still open. Click on it and then click
the End Task button. After that, all should be ok!

Progressive Learning Series: Sharpen Fuzzy Printing

If your printer isn't producing the clear, crisp output you expect, two
things could be at fault: Your printer could be dirty or you could have it
set at low-resolution output.

To change output quality, try increasing the resolution in the Print Options
menu for the document you're working on. In Microsoft Word, for example, go
to the File menu, click on Print, then Properties. Look for Print Quality.
Switching to the highest quality printing should sharpen things up, but keep
in mind that this will use more ink.

If increasing the resolution doesn't work, clean the heads of the ink
cartridges following the manufacturer's instructions. Most recommend using a
small amount of rubbing alcohol on the tip of a cotton swab.
