Special Feature: Using Links

The following question is from a newsletter subscriber:

You frequently put Links into the newsletter to websites that I think I would find interesting. I don’t know how to use the link though. Could you explain?

 Answer:
A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser. Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up. Open your browser; click on the address bar. Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Paste from the menu that you just opened up. Press the Enter key on the keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Today's Computer Term:    Control Key Combination

The following question is from a newsletter subscriber:

When I go into menus in some of my programs, sometimes I see something that says Ctrl + a letter. What does this mean?

 Answer
That's a Control key combination, which is a command issued by pressing a keyboard character while pressing the Control key. Menus usually represent control key commands with the prefix CTRL- or CNTL-. For example, CTRL+N means hold down the Control key and press and release N.

What happens after you enter a Control key combination depends on what application is active. Certain Control key combinations are semi-standardized. For example, in Windows applications, CTRL-X usually cuts the selected text for pasting somewhere else.

Today's Topic:   What To Do When Your Computer Freezes

The following question is from a newsletter subscriber:

What is the best way to get out of freezes? I do what the screen tells me but it never works and I have to pull the plug. I know it's wrong but I have no alternative.

 Answer:
When your computer freezes, instead of pulling the plug (which is not a great thing to do), try this:

With your left hand, hold down the Alt key and the Ctrl key (you'll find these on your keyboard). With your right hand, press and release the delete key, then release the alt and ctrl.

You’ll see a window appear in the middle of the screen listing the programs that you have currently open. One or more of these will say Program Not Responding. Click on that, and then click the button below that says End Program. That should get your computer back up and working. It’s always a good idea to then shut it down the right way, wait a couple of minutes and turn it back on.

On the rare occasion that the Alt Ctrl Del doesn't work, hold down the on button for 5 seconds -- that will turn the computer off without unplugging it; then turn it back on after a couple of moments.

Progressive Learning Series: Word Processing - The Ruler

Sometimes the Word ruler is helpful to have on the screen. But most of the time all the ruler does is take up space. If it’s in the way, it can be turned off. When you need it again, turn it back on.

To turn off the ruler, click on View on the menu. Notice Ruler has a check mark next to it; click on it, which will close the menu and the ruler will be gone. You can turn it back on the same way.

Note: This tip applies to both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works Word Processor.
