Special Feature: Bookmarks and Favorites
Question: This is my first computer and I am learning a lot from your classes and this newsletter. How do I bookmark a place on a website for easy return to it?
Answer: To save the address of a website so you can easily visit it again is called bookmarks in Netscape, and Favorites in Internet Explorer and America Online.
Netscape - Go to the web page you want to save, click on Bookmarks in the toolbar, then click on Bookmark this page. When you click on Bookmarks you will see the name of that page. Click on it to return to that page.
Internet Explorer - Go to the web page you want to save, click on Favorites in the menu bar, and click on Add to Favorites. When you click on Favorites you will see the web page listed there.
America Online - Go to the web page you want to save, click on the small heart that appears on the window’s title bar of the website you are visiting. Click on Add to Favorites. To return to the website, click on My Favorites on the toolbar; find your website in the list and click on it.

Question: Is it possible to put my favorites in alphabetical order?
Answer: Open Internet Explorer. Click on Favorites in the menu bar. Important: This will NOT work if you use Favorites in the toolbar (the list of Favorites that appears in a pane on the left side of the window)
When your list of favorites drops down from the menu bar, right click on any one of the shortcuts in the menu and then click Sort by Name.
Your Favorites will then be alphabetized in both the menu and the Favorites pane on the left side of the window.
America Online Users: Sorry, there isn’t a quick way to alphabetize your Favorites. You can drag them into an order you want. Point to the Favorite, hold down the left mouse button, and drag up or down to wherever you want. Once it is there, release the mouse button. Be careful you do not drop it into another folder!

Question: Can I move my favorites around, into a different order? I would like to group favorites for similar websites. Thank you for all your help. http://computerkindergarten.com/html/120102.html
Answer: You can drag and drop to quickly rearrange the order of your favorites list with the Favorites Explorer bar.
To open the Favorites Explorer bar click the Favorites button on the IE toolbar. The Explorer bar will open in a separate pane inside your IE browser window. Now you can move a folder or items within a folder by just dragging and dropping. To see favorites stored inside any folder, just click a folder's icon and a list for the folder's content drops down.
To move a favorite on your list into a folder or to a new position in its folder, drag its icon up or down the Explorer bar to the new location. You'll notice a heavy horizontal line as you drag. This shows you where the favorite would be inserted when you release the mouse button.

Question: Can I change the name of a Favorite to make it more meaningful to me?
Answer: If you would like to change the name of a Favorite, here is how:
In the left pane, right click the favorite. From the resulting menu, click Properties. The website Properties window will open. Click the General tab.
Click in the textbox at the top, remove the current name and type in the new name. Click the OK button.

Question: One of the website I regularly visit and get to through my favorites has changed its address. It displays a message that it will automatically redirect me there, which it does, but that takes a few moments. Can I update my favorite with the new address?
Answer: Websites will occasionally change their URL (address) and redirect visits to the new page. To update your favorite, copy the new address and update the favorite’s Properties. Here is how:
When you have been directed to the site, click once in the address bar. The address will turn blue. Hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard and then press the c key. This will copy the new address.
In the left pane, right click the favorite. From the resulting menu, click Properties. The website Properties window will open. Click the Web Document tab. You will see the old URL listed there. Delete it. Click in the URL box, hold down the CTRL key and then press the v key. This will paste in the new address.

Question: I would like to make a printout of my Favorites. Can I do this?
Answer: Yes, you can. But not like you would print a conventional document - there are a lot of steps. You must create a printable HTML document. Here’s how:
First create the HTML document. Open Internet Explorer. Click File and then Import/Export. This will open the Import/Export Wizard window. Click the Next button.
Select Export Favorites then click Next. If your favorites are organized into folders you can choose to save all.
Choose Export to a File or Address. Input a filename and location. To make the file easy to find, click the Browse button and save it to the desktop. Click Next.
Click Finish and you are done with part one.
Go to the desktop and double click the file. It will open up in Internet Explorer. The file will open to a page of names with clickable links; with the following steps, you will be able to print the addresses.
Internet Explorer 5 Click File and then Print. Click to check the Print table of links box. Click OK.
Internet Explorer 6 Click File and then Print. Click the Options tab. Click to check the Print table of links box. Click OK
Click the Print button.
Note: AOL does not have the ability to print favorites.

Question: My computer is on its last legs. I put copies of all my important files on CDs. Can I do this with my Internet favorites, too?
Answer: It is always a good idea to periodically backup anything that is of value to you. If anything happens to your computer, your list of Favorites will be gone along with everything else. A backup will save the information to external storage like a floppy disk or cd-rom, and, in the event of a computer crash, they can simply be transferred to a new computer or the old one if repair is possible.
To back up your Favorites List in Internet Explorer:
1. Open Internet Explorer, click File, then Import and Export. 2. Click Next, and Choose Export Favorites, then Next again 3. Make sure Favorites is selected and choose Next again. 4. Click Browse to tell the computer where to store your backup 5. Choose a place (other than on your hard drive) to store this file (you can choose to save it to a floppy disk, zip drive or to a server (for those of you with access to a server). 6. Click Save
That's it! Now your Internet Explorer Favorites are backed up should your PC become sick (or worse)! You should repeat this periodically to make sure you have the most current version of your favorites backed up.

Question: I just got a new computer and would like to use my Favorites from my old computer. Can I just copy them to my new computer?
Answer: Yes, you can do that. Here is how:
On the old computer, open Internet Explorer. Click File on the menu, then Import and Export. This will open the Import/Export wizard. Click Next and then select what you want to do; in this case, Export Favorites. Click Next.
In the next window, you can choose to export your entire Favorites folder, or individual sub-folders. Since you want to export everything, click Favorites at the top of the list. Click Next.
You will want to export to a file, so make sure Export to a File or Address is selected, and then click the Browse button to choose the location you want to export to. The floppy drive would work well for this; select 3 1/2 floppy A: from the Save in drop down list. Click Save.
Click Next, and then Finish.
To put your favorites on your new computer, insert the floppy disk in the drive. Open Internet Explorer and follow the steps above, choosing Import instead of export.

Question: I have Favorites in my list that I do not use anymore. How can I erase them?
Answer: Point to the favorite you want to get rid of, right click on it and then left click on Delete in the menu you now see. Left click on the Yes button in the Confirm File Delete window that you now see. The Favorite will be removed from the list and sent to the Recycle Bin.

Question: My grandson was showing me something on his computer and I noticed that he has his Favorites on the taskbar (the bar at the bottom of the screen that has the start button on the left and the clock on the right). All he has to do is click on that to list the favorites. I use my Favorites frequently and I think this would be very useful to me. Could you tell me if I can set up my computer to do this? Thank you.
Answer: You can put your favorites on the taskbar in Windows XP. There are quite a few steps, described below, which you must follow exactly in order to do this.
Right click on a blank spot on your taskbar, and point to Toolbars in the resulting menu. A menu will come out to the side. In it, you will see a list of available toolbars. Favorites is not on the list, so you will need to add it manually. To do so, click New Toolbar at the bottom of the list.
The New Toolbar window will open. In it, you will see a list of folders on your computer. Favorites needs to be located and chosen in this folder. To do so, click the plus sign to the left of My Computer. This will open up My Computer and show you the list of drives on your computer.
Click the plus sign next to Local Disk (C:), then click the plus sign next to Documents and Settings.
Under Documents and Settings, find your user name. If there is not a folder with your name on it, you can try Administrator or Default User.
Click the Plus sign next to your user name, Administrator or Default User and you will see Favorites listed. Click once directly on the word Favorites (do not click the plus sign this time) Click OK.
You will now have a Favorites button on your taskbar. If it does not contain your favorites, repeat the steps and instead of Administrator, try Default User.
To use your new Favorites button, click the two small right arrows. You will see the Favorites menu open on your screen, click the one you want to open Internet Explorer and go to that page.
If you no longer want Favorites on your taskbar, you can easily remove it. To do so, right click on a blank spot on your taskbar, and point to Toolbars in the resulting menu. A menu will come out to the side. Left click on Favorites.
