Important:   Cell Phone Hoax Email

Ignore any emails warning you that telemarketers will be allowed to call cell phone numbers if you don't add your number to the Do Not Call Registry. The message is a very widespread hoax.  Almost ten million people already fell for it.

Special Feature:   Scan Disk

Scan Disk is a Windows feature that checks your hard drive for errors.  If it finds an error, it tries to fix it and is usually successful.

It is a good idea to run Scan Disk periodically, ideally once a month or so.

If you are using Windows 9x (95, 98 or ME), click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System tools and click on Scan Disk.

Windows XP changed the name to Error Checking.  Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop.  Point to the C: drive and right click.  From the resulting menu, left click on Properties.  This will open the Local Disk C: Properties window.  Click the Tools tab.  Click the Check Now button.

Tips & Tricks:     Open Multiple Programs at Once

Ever want to open more than one program?  Normally, you click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click the program you want to open. If you need to open another, you have to repeat the entire process for the next program. Well, here's a better way.

Open the Start button menu and maneuver to the program you want like yhou usually do. hold down the Shift key while you click the program. The program will open, but the Programs menu will remain open on the screen; you will not have to start all over to open the next program.

Today's Topic:   Windows Hot Fixes

Question:  Windows XP is always installing Hot Fixes. How do I know what these are?

Answer:
Windows XP automatically updates itself with Hot Fixes. Usually these are to fix vulnerabilities in the system where hackers could make their way into your computer.  You can find out exactly what all these hot fixes do.  Here is how:

Open Control Panel.  Open Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down toward the bottom of the window and you will see Windows XP Hot fix.

Click the hot fix and it will expand to show Click here for support information. Clicking there will take you to the Microsoft website where you will see a description of what that hot fix does.

Note:  you must be online when you follow the above steps.
