Special Feature:   Print Favorites

Question:  Can I print my Internet Explorer Favorites?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  But not like you would print a conventional document - there are a lot of steps. You must create a printable HTML document. Here’s how:

First create the HTML document. Open Internet Explorer.  Click File and then Import/Export.  This will open the Import/Export Wizard window. Click the Next button.

Select Export Favorites then click Next. If your favorites are organized into folders you can choose to save all.

Choose Export to a File or Address.  Input a filename and location. To make the file easy to find, click the Browse button and save it to the desktop. Click Next.

Click Finish and you are done with part one.

Go to the desktop and double click the file.  It will open up in Internet Explorer. The file will open to a page of names with clickable links; with the following steps, you will be able to print the addresses.

Internet Explorer 5
Click File and then Print.  Click to check the Print table of links box.  Click OK.

Internet Explorer 6
Click File and then Print.   Click the Options tab. Click to check the Print table of links box.  Click OK

Click the Print button.

Note:  AOL does not have the ability to print favorites.

Tips & Tricks:     Stop Internet Animations and Music

Some websites have animated graphics and play music that can become annoying.  To stop both, simply click the Stop button on the toolbar.

To permanently stop animations and music from playing at any website, click Tools on the menu and then Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Multimedia section and click to uncheck the boxes marked Play animations in web pages and Play sounds in web pages.

Click the OK button to close the window.

Featured Computer Term:     Degauss

Question:  My monitor has a Degauss button.  What is this?

Answer:
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors display images by creating magnetic fields inside and then aiming electrons onto the display screen. Outside magnetic forces, for example, the Earth's magnetic field, can distort images and colors. Degaussing realigns the magnetic fields inside the CRT to make up for the magnetism outside.

Many manufacturers include an internal coil that will degauss when you turn the monitor on. If your monitor is older or does not have an auto degauss, you may need to press that button if the image starts acting weird.

LCD monitors, for example, flat screen monitors, do not work with magnetic fields so there is no need to degauss.

Today's Topic:   Consistent Folder Views

Question:  Some of my folders show big icons, some show a list of filenames, and others have thumbnails. Is there a way to make them all the same?

Answer:
Yes, there is.  Double click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.

Open the View menu and choose the folder view that you want for all of your folders.

Set your icon arrangement. Open the View menu again and point to Arrange Icons by.  Click to select your favorite sort order.

To set all of your folders the same way, open the Tools menu (or View menu, depending on your version of Windows) and select Folder Options. Click the View tab and click the Apply to all folders button (or the Like Current Folder button, depending on your version of Windows). A confirmation window will display, click Yes.

Click the OK button to close the window.  All folders window views should now be identical.

If there is a single folder where you want a different view, just change that folder view following the steps detailed above.

Question:   Power Management

If I don’t use my computer for about 2 minutes, the screen goes off.   Then I have to shake the mouse like crazy to get it back on again.  Can I make this stop?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  You have to change the Power Management settings.  Here is how:

Open Control Panel.  Open the Power Management icon.  Note:  in Windows XP, click Performance and Maintenance to find the Power Management icon.

Look for the Turn off monitor drop down box. Click the down arrow to the right of it and click to select the amount of time you want the computer to wait before shutting off the monitor.

Click OK and close Control Panel.
