Special Feature: Insert a Picture in an AOL Email
Question: Can I add a picture to an America Online email? And, if so, how do I do it?
Answer: You can insert pictures with these extensions: .art, .jpg, .gif, and .bmp, into an AOL email.
To do so, open a new email window. You will see a toolbar right under the Subject line. On the right side you will see a button with a picture of a camera on it; that’s the Insert a Picture button.
Click the Insert a Picture button and then click Insert Pictures from the menu.
In the Open window that you now see, maneuver to the folder where the picture is located.
You'll see thumbnails on the right side of the window. In the top, left corner of the thumbnail is a little check box. Click that to select the pictures you want to insert in the email. Click the Insert button.
The picture will now display in your email.
To change the size and layout of the picture in the email, right click on the picture. From the resulting menu, point to Resize Picture. Try some of the options in that menu.
Note: depending on the recipient’s email program, they may not see the picture in the email and my have to download the attachment.

Tips & Tricks: Sizing Taskbar Icons
I have icons on my taskbar for programs that I use very frequently. Can I make these bigger so that I can see them better?
Answer: Yes, you can. To make icons in your taskbar bigger, just right-click a blank area next to one of the icons (do not click right on the icon or this trick will not work). From the resulting menu, point to View, and then left click on Large Icons.

Featured Computer Term: Page Expired
Question: When I’m on the Internet, I sometimes get an error message that says Page Expired. What does this mean?
Answer: If you are on a secure web page like your banking or credit card site, or you are at a shopping cart, you may get this message if you go to another site and then back up to it again; or if you don’t do anything on the site for a few minutes. Page Expired means that the website automatically logged you out in case you forgot to. You will probably be prompted to log back in.
Is there a computer term or phrase that you'd like to see an explanation of? Email it to info@computerkindergarten.com and we'll put the term and its definition in an upcoming newsletter.

Today's Topic: Safe Mode
Question: What is Safe Mode?
Answer: Safe mode is a different way of starting Windows. It is used for maintenance and repair because only the bare minimum of programs and drivers are loaded. You will not be able to use ROM drives, printers, or other non-essential devices.
This mode is used when there are problems with the computer. For example, if you install a new card in the computer and do not load the correct drivers for it, this could cause the video display to stop working. Going into Safe mode would turn the video display back on, allowing you to uninstall the incorrect driver and install the correct one.
Safe mode can also be used to find problems with programs. If you get too many illegal operation messages with a particular program, try running the program in safe mode. If the program runs fine in safe mode, then another program or driver is incompatible with the program and causing the error.
To start up in Safe mode, turn the computer on. Before you see the first Windows screen, press the F8 key. You may have to try this several times before you get it. As soon as you see the manufacturer's splash screen, beginning pressing the F8 key.
