To our readers:

We’ve gotten thousands of emails from people thanking us for our articles on scams and hoaxes and how we have helped save them from being victimized.  We appreciate your thanks and are glad we can help.  We wish we had the time to answer each email.

Here at Sharper Training Solutions, one of the things we are very dedicated to is educating all of our friends as to the identity theft and computer dangers that can be out there.  We’ve found that some of these scams can be pretty clever and can easily fool even the most suspicious of us!  Because of that, we encourage you to pass on our newsletter articles to your friends and family to educate them as well.

And don’t forget, you can always email us with any questions or issues you may encounter.

Stay safe out there !

Special Feature:   Worst Email Scams
The following is from switched.com:

Scam #3: You Win!

The Come-On

After all those MegaBall tickets and EasyScratches, you finally get that e-mail -- you've won millions!

The Scam

Of course, in order to get the money, you'll need to submit your bank account and credit card information because there's a handling charge. You'll be charged, usually for the handling charges of $75-100 and never get the winnings.

What You Can Do

Carols says: "An e-mail claiming that it's your lucky day most likely actually means the exact opposite. You should never pay to play. It's illegal for a company to require you to buy something or pay a fee in order to win or claim a prize. And real winners pay taxes to the government, not the company purporting to be giving you the 'prize.'"

Featured Computer Term:    The Scroll Lock Key

Question:  What is the Scroll key for on my keyboard?

Answer:
Not much anymore.  While most keyboards still have a Scroll Lock key, it is rarely used since the mouse came along.  The key, which may be labeled Scroll, or ScrLk, is usually found next to the Print Screen (PrtScn) key.

When the Scroll Lock key was added to keyboards, it was used with the arrow keys.  When Scroll Lock was turned on (the button was pressed), rather than move the cursor, the arrow keys would scroll up or down through the window.  Now, we use the scroll bars or the scroll wheel on the mouse to move through open windows.

Is there a computer term or phrase that you'd like to see an explanation of?  Email it to info@computerkindergarten.com and we'll put the term and its definition in an upcoming newsletter.

Today's Topic:   CD and DVD Burners

Question:  I would like to put some important files on a CD just in case something happens to my computer.  How do I know if my CD drive can save files?

The following is from worldstart.com

Open up your CD/DVD ROM drive and look on the front of the tray. There should be some sort of logo written on the very front of the tray telling you if it's a burner or not. If it just says something like "CD Drive," there probably isn't a burner there. If it says CD/DVD R-RW, you do have a burner. That's the easiest way to tell.

The other thing you can do is look in the Device Manager. To get there, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Choose Properties and then click on the Hardware tab. Once you're there, click on the Device Manager button and you will be taken to a list of all the hardware you have on your system. Double click on DVD/CD ROM Drive to expand it. If an extension comes up that says something like CD-RW or DVD-RW, you have a burner. If anything comes up at all, you more than likely already have a burner in your computer.

Question:  Windows Vista:  Turn Off Startup Sound

Can you tell us how to turn off the sound when the computer starts?

Answer:

Yes, you can disable the clicking sound.  Here are the steps:

Click on the Start button and open Control Panel.  Open Hardware and Sound. Click on Sound.  At the top of the window that you now see, click the Sounds tab.

Click the checkbox to the left of Play Windows Startup Sound.  This will remove the checkmark.

Click the OK button and close any open Control Panel windows.

You will no longer hear any clicking sounds when your computer turns on.

If you are annoyed by the clicking sound you hear every time you click on a link in Internet Explorer, visit our newsletter archives to learn how to turn the sound off:
