Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Tips & Tricks:     Delete Multiple Emails

Save some time: rather than deleting each email separately, hold down the ctrl key while you click on each email you want to delete.  When they are all selected, delete in the usual manner.

Today's Topic:   Stop Pop Up Windows / Minimize Junk Email

Since we received an overwhelming number of emails this week asking for information on how to stop pop up windows and spam, we thought it worthwhile to again feature links to our website:

Question:   Attached Pictures: X Instead of Picture

Sometimes I get emails with pictures but, instead of viewing the picture, all I see is a square with an X in the upper left hand corner.  I can not see the picture.  What am I doing wrong?  I really enjoy your emails.  I learn something new in every issue.

Answer:
You are not doing anything wrong.  The X indicates that you did not receive the picture that is supposed to be there.  There are a couple of reasons for this.

The picture may have been dropped from the email.  Sometimes mail servers will drop pictures if the picture is from an unknown source, contains a virus or may potentially contain a virus, or is larger than the size limitations of your email program.  Ask the sender to create and send the email again.

The picture could be linked to the sender’s hard drive, which you, of course, do not have access to from your computer.  This means that the sender tried to put the picture into the email but just put a link into the email instead – the file (the actual picture) is not in the email – it is just on the sender’s computer.  Ask the sender to create the email again and attach the file.

Question:  Finding Search Engines

Is there a place on the Internet where I can get a list of search engines?

Answer:
Go to your favorite search engine and search for search engines.  That will give a list search engines with a small description of each.

You can also visit Search Engine Watch for news, information, reviews and ratings of search engines.
