Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Tips & Tricks:  Add a Favorite to the Start Menu

For a website that you visit very often, you can add a link directly to the Start Menu. Then, all you have to do is click on the Start button and select the link - you do not need to open Internet Explorer first.

To create this link, open Internet Explorer and navigate to the website.  Add the website to your Favorites (Click Favorites, click Add to Favorites).

Click the Favorites button on the toolbar to display the Favorites navigation pane on the left side of the Internet Explorer window.  Point to the link you want to add to the Start button, hold down the left mouse button and drag it onto the Start button.  Release the mouse button.

Tips & Tricks:     Alphabetize the Start Menu

Question:  I have so many programs in my Start menu that it makes it difficult to find what I’m looking for.  Can I put them in alphabetical order?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Click the Start button and point to Programs or All Programs (depending on your version of Windows). Point to any program in the programs list and right click on it. From the resulting menu, left click Sort by Name. All your programs should now be listed alphabetically.

Tips & Tricks:  Create an Email Icon

E-mail is what many people use most.  For those using Outlook, here is a great shortcut for creating and sending an email – create an icon on the desktop.  Then, all you have to do is double click the icon and start writing.

Here is how you do it:

Right click on a blank spot on the desktop.  In the resulting menu, point to New, and click Shortcut. Type in Mailto: and click the Next button. Type in a name for the shortcut (for example, Send Email) and click Finish. A icon will now appear on your desktop. To use it, double click it and then you can create your email as you usually do.

Tips & Tricks:  Delete Junk Email Quickly

If you get a lot of junk mail and would like to delete quickly, here are a couple of shortcuts:

Click on the first message you want to delete, then hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard. Then click on all the other messages you want to select. You will see that they all remain selected.  When you have selected all the messages you want, release the Ctrl key and click on the Delete button or press the Delete key on your keyboard.

If you want to delete several emails in a row, click the first email, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard, and then click the last email.  You will see that all the emails between these two are selected.  Release the Shift key and click on the Delete button or press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Today's Topic:   Email Virus Notifications

Question:  I get many emails notifying me of viruses found in e-mails sent to me. Sometimes I get as many as 5 or 6 a day.  I do not recognize the email addresses that these viruses are coming from.  What should I be doing about this?

Answer:
With all the spam, phishing, viruses, and worms that get sent on a daily basis, nowadays it is not unusual to get more junk then good stuff.

The latest is the multitude of warning messages about infected emails, which have many e-mail users worrying that they are doing something wrong or that they have contracted a virus.

The warning message that you received lets you know that your protection system (your anti-virus program) is working as it should be and that any infection has been removed before it reached your system.

Here is what is happening:

The majority of viruses send themselves from infected systems to everyone in the infected computer's address book. The virus is able to create a fake return address so the recipient (you) does not know who it came from.  Unfortunately, as long as your e-mail address is in other user's address books, and those users do not have adequate anti-virus programs, you will be receiving these types of messages.

Your anti-virus program, when kept updated, scans and removes any viruses from the infected messages and notifies you every time it does.  If this were not happening, you could possibly open one of the infected attachments.

There is nothing you have to do other than make sure your anti-virus program is kept updated.  These notification emails can be deleted along with the rest of the junk mail that you receive.

Question:   Edit Outlook Email Addresses

I have all of my family’s addresses, phone numbers and email addresses in my Outlook address book.  My daughter changed her email address.  Do I have to delete her whole address and input everything all over again or can I just change the email address?

Answer:
You can edit information in your address book without deleting the entire entry.  To do so, click the Addresses button on the toolbar and click to select the person you want to edit.  click the Properties button on the address book toolbar.

In the Properties dialog box, click the Name tab on the top.  Click the email address and then the Edit button.  Type the new address and then click the OK button.  Close the Address book window.

The new address will now appear when you input it into an email.
