Using Links
A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to many worthwhile, informative and fun websites. Here are the instructions on how to use links:
A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.
If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your screen.
If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser. Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up. Open your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet Explorer); click on the address bar. Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Paste from the menu that you just opened up. Press the Enter key on the keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Featured Computer Term: Blog
Question: I have heard this term several times lately – what is a blog?
Answer: A blog, or webblog, is a personal diary or journal published on the Internet for anyone and everyone to read. It is usually updated periodically; sometimes daily or even hourly, depending on the author, also known as the blogger.
Blogs will contain anything that the blogger has to say – personal opinions, descriptions of events in the authors life, news, politics, hobbies – whatever he or she wants to write about. The characteristics that most blogs have in common is the informal style of writing and the frequent updates.

Keyboard Shortcuts: Formatting
Instead of using your mouse to click the different buttons on the toolbar, you can use the keyboard to bold, italicize or underline a word.
To format a word, move the insertion point somewhere in the word. Hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and press b to bold, i to italicize or u to underline.

Today's Topic: Password Protect Your Computer
Would you tell me how to put a password on my computer? I watch my grandchildren and do not want them to use the computer when I am not right there. Thank you.
Answer: Click on the Start button and then open Control Panel. Once in Control Panel, open User Accounts and then click on Change an account.
In the screen that says Please pick an account to change, click on your account. In the next window, click on Create a Password.
You will be prompted to type in your password twice and a hint to help you remember your password. Input the information and click Create Password when you are done.
Don’t forget your password; it is very difficult to get back into your computer if you do. Just in case, Windows provides a feature where you can create a floppy disk that will allow you to reset the password on your computer. To set this up, go back to User Accounts and click on your account. On the left you will find Prevent a forgotten password. Click on that and follow the prompts.

Question: Internet Explorer Status Bar
In Internet Explorer, there is an area at the bottom of the window that would show a small progress bar when a page is loading. It is not there anymore. Could you tell me if and how I can restore it? Thank you for the great newsletter. I have sent it on to many friends and you have many admirers.
Answer: The area at the bottom of the Internet Explorer window is called the status bar. To display it, open Internet Explorer and click View on the menu bar. You will see Status Bar in the menu; click on it. The status bar will now appear at the bottom of the Internet Explorer window.
