Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to
many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on
how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on
it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your
screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address
bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on
the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open
your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet
Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then
click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the
keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Tips & Tricks:    Saving Websites Pictures

Question:  How do I save pictures from a Web site?

Answer:
With your mouse, point to the picture you want to save and Right-click (press the right mouse button).  From the resulting menu, left click Save Picture As on menu that appears.

Navigate to the folder in which you would like to save the Picture. Note the filename; change it if you want.

Tips & Tricks:     Open Multiple Internet Explorer Windows

Occasionally you may want to look at more than one website at a time.  To do so in Internet Explorer, hold down ctrl key and press N.  Another window will open with the same website.  In that second window, go to the other website you want to look at.

Keyboard Shortcut:  Close Internet Explorer

You can close the current window by pressing CTRL+W.

Today's Topic:   America Online - Remove Old Website Addresses

Your computer keeps a history of website that you visit.  If you choose to revisit a website, type the first few letters of the website address in the address box, and the history list will display all the websites you visited that start with those letters.  Then, all you have to do is click on the one you want instead of typing the whole address in.

This is a convenient feature until there are too many website address accumulated; most of which you will never visit again.

You can remove these old addresses by following these steps:

Click Settings on the AOL toolbar. In the Settings:  Essential window that you now see, click Internet [Web] Options.

You will now see the AOL Internet Properties Window.  In the History section, click the Clear History button.  Click the OK button. (The process may take several minutes.)

You can set AOL to remove website addresses every time you sign off.  To do so, follow these steps:

Click Settings on the AOL toolbar. In the Settings:  Essential window that you now see, click Toolbar or Toolbar & Sound Preferences (depending on your version of AOL).

In the Toolbar Settings window that you now see, click the check box to the left Clear History Trail and Auto-Complete after each time I Sign off or Switch Screen Names.  Click the Save button and close all windows.

In last week’s issue of this newsletter we did an article on removing website addresses in Internet Explorer.  To read this article, visit our website:

Question:   Changing Column Width in Excel

I use Excel to keep track of all my financial information. I just started having a problem where some of the columns show number signs (##) instead of the number that is supposed to be in there.  Can you tell me what is causing this?

Answer:
The column is too narrow for the whole number to be displayed.  Excel will not cut off the number; it displays the number signs instead.

This is easily adjusted - just make the column wider.  Here is how:

At the top of your spreadsheet each column has a letter. If you want to make a column wider, point the mouse arrow on the line that separates that column from the column to the right of it.  For example, if you want to make Column C wider, point to the line between the C and the D.

When you get to the right spot the mouse arrow will turn into a cross-hatch arrow.  That is a black vertical line with a horizontal double-headed arrow.  When you see that symbol, hold down your left mouse button and drag the line to the right. This will make the column wider.

Here is a shortcut that may be easier:  If you want to make the column just wide enough for the widest entry, double click when you see the cross hatch arrow.  The column will now be the correct size to accommodate the widest entry.

Question:  Internet Explorer - Increase Text Size

I have a little trouble with my vision which makes the text on some web pages difficult to read.  Can I make the text larger?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  To do so, click View on the menu bar, and then point to Text Size. You will see Smallest, Smaller, Medium, Larger, and Largest.  The current setting has a small circle next to it; click a larger setting.
