Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to  many worthwhile, informative and fun websites.  Here are the instructions on  how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on  it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your  screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address  bar on your browser.  Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on  the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up.  Open  your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet  Explorer); click on the address bar.  Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then  click Paste from the menu that you just opened up.  Press the Enter key on the  keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature:   Creating Folders and Moving Files

Question:  I have a lot of files in the My Documents folder.  When I have to find something, it takes me awhile to look through what I have.  Could you give me the steps for creating a folder and then putting the files I want into that folder?  Thank you so much.

Answer:
To create a folder, open your my Documents folder.  Click File on the menu and point to New.  Click Folder.

At the bottom of your list of files, you will see New Folder.  Type in the name of the folder and press the Enter key.

To move files into the new folder, click the file you want to move and drag it right onto the name of the new folder.  When the name of the folder turns blue, release the mouse button.

To move multiple files, hold down the CTRL key and click each file you want to move.  When they are all selected, drag them into the new folder.

Tips & Tricks:     Mouse Pointer Schemes

If you are tired of seeing your mouse pointer as the same old arrow or hourglass, Windows XP offers a number of pointer shapes designs.

Open Control Panel and click Appearance and Themes.  On the left, click Mouse Points.  Click the Pointers tab at the top.  Next to Schemes, click the down arrow and select a scheme to preview its pointers. Click OK to apply the scheme to your desktop.

Today's Topic:   Email Signatures

Question:  I receive emails that have the sender’s name, address and other messages at the bottom.  This appears on all emails they send so I assume that its somehow there automatically – that they are not typing it in each time.  Can you give me information on this?  Thank you.

Answer:
That is called an email signature.   A signature can contain any text you want to add to every email you send.  Some email programs will allow you to set up a signature.

Outlook Express

Click Tools on the menu and then Options.  Click the Signatures tab at the top of the window.

Click the New button and type your text in the Edit Signature box.  Click the checkbox to the left of Add signatures to all outgoing messages.  If you want your signature added to replies and forwards, click to remove the checkmark from Don’t add signature to Replies and Forwards.

America Online

Click Mail on the menu and then Set Mail Signatures. In the Set up Signatures window, click the Create button.

In the Signature Name box, type a name for this signature. For example: Sig1.  Type your text in the Signature box. Click the OK button.

If you would like your signature to display on every email you send, click the Default On/Off button.  A check mark will appear next to the name of your signature.

Yahoo Mail

Click Mail Options.  Click Signature.  Type your text in the Signature box.  Click the checkbox next to Add signature to all outgoing messages.  Click the Save button.

Question:   Download Warnings

When I click to download something from a website, I receive a message that says some files could harm your computer.  If the file information looks suspicious or you do not trust the source, do not open.  I am hesitant to download these files.  Should I download this?

Answer:
Windows XP will display this warning whenever you try to download something. It does not mean that the file you are trying to download is a danger.  It is telling you that if you do download a file with a virus, your computer can get the virus.

When you download any file, especially a program from a website, run a virus scan on it to check for a virus.  To do this, open your antivirus program and scan the folder in which you downloaded the file.

Question:   Windows Messenger

Question:  Windows Messenger starts up automatically whenever I turn my computer on.  It takes up resources so I would like to remove it.   I know a bit about computers but cannot figure out how to remove this one from auto startup; it keeps reappearing there.  Can you help?

Answer:
Windows Messenger has been a challenge to many people since the release of XP.   By default, it is installed in Windows XP and the user interface does not provide a way to remove or uninstall it.

In response to many questions and complaints, Microsoft released a knowledge base article(Q302089) on how to prevent Windows Messenger from running.  you can read it at this website:
