Today's Featured Computer Term:    World Wide Web

The Web is a system of connected computers. These computers, known as Internet servers, hold documents that are all written using the same type of programming language. The documents are formatted in a language called HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). With HTML, these documents can contain graphics, audio, and video files as well as links to other documents. This means you can jump from one document to another simply by clicking on hot spots or links.

These documents, or Web Sites, can be retrieved and viewed when you enter a Web Site address in your browser, because you are actually sending a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) command to the Web server directing it to find and transmit the requested Web page.

There are several applications called Web browsers that make it easy to access the World Wide Web; two of the most popular being Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

There is a difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web. The Internet is simply a global network connecting millions of computers that all work together to share information. Only with this global network of computers in place is the World Wide Web able to exist.

Because all of the Web Sites that make up the World Wide Web are formatted using the same programming language, and because all browsers know how to request these specially formatted Web Site files, we are able to browse, or surf, the Web.

Today's Topic:   Finding Downloaded Files

Today’s topic is from a question sent in by newsletter subscriber Sue.

Question:
Help! I downloaded an important file and can't find it. What do I do now?

Answer:
You can locate any file on your computer using the built-in feature called "Find Files and Folders". In Windows ME and XP, it is called "Search"

Go back to the original email and jot down the filename.

Click the Start button, point your mouse to Find (Search), then to Files and Folders, and click.

Type the name of the file you are looking for into the 'Named' field and look in Drive (C:). Make sure there is a check mark in front of "Include subfolders". When the file is found, it will be displayed in the lower windowpane. You can simply double click to open the file or drag it to your desktop for easy access in the future.

Progressive Learning Series: Microsoft Word

Changing The Number Of Columns

If you have already changed your document into columns, Word lets you easily change the number of columns you are using. For example, let’s say you changed your document into three columns and then decided you wanted it in two columns. To change the number of columns, follow these steps:

Make sure the insertion point is somewhere in the columns.

1. Select the Columns option from the Format menu. When you do, you will see the Columns dialog box.
2. Change the value in the Number of Columns field to the number of columns you want.
3. In the Apply To box, select This Section (depending on what you want your change to affect). This causes Word to reformat the layout of your columns.
4. Click on OK.
