Special Feature:  Email Virus Alert:  Email Scam Spoofs FTC

The following is from consumeraffairs.com.

The Federal Trade Commission is warning consumers not to open a bogus email that claims to come from the FTC. The email states it is from the FTC Fraud Department and carries a virus.

"A bogus email is circulating that says it is from the FTC referencing a complaint filed with the commission against the email's recipient," the Commission advises.

The email includes links and an attachment that download a virus. As with any suspicious email, the FTC warns recipients not to click on links within the email and not to open any attachments.

“The spoof email includes a phony sender’s address, making it appear the email is from “frauddep@ftc.gov” and also spoofs the return-path and reply-to fields to hide the email’s true origin,” according to the FTC.

"The email includes the FTC seal but contains grammatical errors, misspellings, and incorrect syntax," according to the federal regulators.

The FTC asks recipients of the email to forward it to spam@uce.gov and then delete the document.

Tips & Tricks:  Quick Internet and Email Safety Reminders

Ninety nine percent of viruses would not have harmed the computer if the user had not clicked on OK.
Never download anything from a web site you do not know.
Never install anything you do not recognize.
If it’s too good to be true, it is.

Question:  Windows Vista Shut Down

When I try to turn my computer off, I click the Start Orb and then the Power Icon button.  This puts the computer to Sleep.  I want to completely turn it off sometimes, how do I do that?

Answer:
To the right of the Shut Down you will see a small arrow pointing to the right.  Point to that for a menu of options.  One of them is Shut Down.  Click on that to turn the computer off.

Today's Topic:   Energy Saving Tips

While your computer may not be the biggest contributor to your high electric bill, it does take energy to keep it going.  Here are several ways you can save while using your computer.

* Decrease the brightness of the screen.

* Don’t use a screensaver.  No energy is being saved if pictures or graphics are flashing around on the screen.

* Set your computer to turn off, hibernate, or sleep after 10 minutes of non use.

* Turn the computer and monitor off when you will not be using them for a long period of time.

* If you are buying a new computer, look for one that is EnergyStar 4.0 Compliant.

* If you’re buying a new monitor, consider a flat panel screen.  They use about half as much power as a regular monitor.

Saving energy will decrease your electric bill and help the environment.  And, if all of us do a little to help, we will make a difference!

Question:  Microsoft Word:  Increase the Number of Recently Used Documents

I liked your tip in last week’s newsletter about Microsoft Word’s recently used documents.  I use the same six or seven docs over and over.  Can I change the settings to have more than four display on that list?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab. Look for Recently used file list.  To the right of it, you will see the number 4.  to the right of the number 4, there are small up and down arrows.  To increase the number of recently used documents, click the up arrow.  You can go as high as 9.

When you are done, click the OK button.
