Using Links

A Link is a reference to a website. In this newsletter you will see links to many worthwhile, informative and fun websites. Here are the instructions on how to use links:

A link will be used one of two ways, depending on your email program.

If you see the link in blue, underlined text, all you have to do is click on it and a window with the Website in it will automatically appear on your screen.

If you see the link in plain text, you can copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser. Highlight the link with your mouse, click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Copy from the menu that you just opened up. Open your browser (click the Start Button, point to Programs, click on Internet Explorer); click on the address bar. Click Edit up on the menu bar, and then click Paste from the menu that you just opened up. Press the Enter key on the keyboard and this will take you to the Website.

Special Feature: Addendum to the 11/17/02 Article on the Browser Links Bar

If you use the Links bar in your browser, you may want to change the icons on the bar to something more helpful (or to something a little less boring than that blue e!).

To do this, right-click the link you want to change and choose Properties. When the dialog box opens, click Change Icon. Click Browse, scroll through the icons and click on the one that you want to use.

Note: You can change most icons this way, including the ones on your desktop.

Special Feature: Keyboard Shortcuts

For when you'd rather not use the mouse. To use, hold down the first key listed, press and release the second key listed, release the first key. Try them out!

ALT+SPACEBAR - Displays the System menu for the window you're in.

CTRL+ESC - Displays the Start button menu

ALT+ Underlined Letter In A Menu Name - Opens the corresponding menu (ex. Alt F opens the File menu in most programs). The underlined letter in a command name on an open menu performs that command (ex S, when the File menu is open, gives the command to save the file)

F10 key - Activates the menu bar. You can then use the Right Arrow or Left Arrow to move to commands to the right or left. When you're on the one you want, use the down arrow to open the menu and highlight the command you want to use. Press the Enter key to give the command.

F6 key - In Internet Explorer, this highlights the address bar; then just type in the address you want to go to.

Today's Computer Term:    Clip Art

A clipart image is an electronic illustration that can be inserted into a document. Many clip-art packages are available, some general and others specialized for a particular field.

Most clip-art packages provide the illustrations in several file formats so that you can insert them into various word-processing systems.

While the term clipart generally refers to electronic cartoons and illustrations, photographic images are being included in clipart packages.

Today's Topic:   Stop Pop Up Advertising Windows When Surfing the Internet

We don’t usually promote software downloads from websites on this newsletter but this program is so fantastic at getting rid of those annoying pop up windows that fill up the screen that we just have to share!

It’s a program called NoAds by South Bay Software that you can download and use, for free (link below).

It works by listing specific pop up windows that your computer should not accept -meaning that if a website tries to display one of the windows listed in your NoAds program, your computer won’t allow it. When using your browser and new ad windows pop up, you add it to NoAds -and you’ll never see that window again.

Here’s how it works:

Once you have installed NoAds and have it running, when a pop-up ad appears:

1. Double click the NoAds icon in the system tray. That's the area of the taskbar next to the clock where icons appear. To identify the NoAds icon, rest the mousepointer over it and you'll see a pop up giving you the name of the program.

2. Click on the tab for your web browser. The Standard tab is for Internet Explorer and Netscape.

3. In the Currently Open Windows section, locate the title of the ad you want removed and click once on it.

4. Click on the Add to Targets button and the window will be added to the list below and automatically closed.

5. Click on the Hide button to send NoAds back to the system tray.

If, at some point, you find you can't open a windows you want to open, you can close NoAds by right clicking on the icon and click Exit. If this fixes the problem, write down the name of the window that you want to use, open NoAds again and find the name of your window in the Windows targeted by NoAds section, click on it and then click the Remove button to remove it from the list.

Question: Inkjet Printers: What are Photo Printers?

Question: I'm shopping for an inkjet printer and I see that some printers are photo printers. Are these photo printers only for photos, or can I use one of these printers for letters and other text documents? What are the differences between the two types of printers?

 Answer:
In most cases, you can use a photo printer for all your needs. While most new inkjet printers are photo quality printers, a photo printer can print at resolutions that are suitable for photos and can print on glossy photo paper.

The ink cartridges shouldn't cost you any more than a regular ink cartridge, but definitely look at the price of cartridges before purchasing any printer regardless of the type of printer. Sometimes the price of the ink cartridges can make the difference between whether you buy one printer over another.

By purchasing a photo quality printer, not only will you have a great inkjet printer, you will also have the capability to print out high-quality digital photos. Make sure though, when you want to print photos, that you use photo paper for inkjet printers. Inkjet photo paper is specially designed for how the ink soaks into the paper so that you don't get colors bleeding together.

Progressive Learning Series: Word Processing: Changing Paper Size

Question: I purchased specialty paper for my family's Christmas newsletter. It’s not the same size as regular paper and it goes from side to side instead of up and down. Can I change the size of the paper on the computer and the direction it goes in?

 Answer:
Yes, you can. In your word processing program (Word or Works), open the File menu, and then click on Page Setup.

In Word, click the Paper Size tab, where you can change to the size of your paper (if you don’t know the size, just measure it with a ruler) and the orientation (side to side or up and down).

If you’re using Microsoft Works, click the Source, Size and Orientation tab and make your changes as above.
