Special Feature:   Warning for Online Shoppers

The following is from WorldStart (used with permission)

When shopping or just plain surfing, be sure you're at an official site before handing over any personal information or downloading any files. Typosquatters are bad guys who register domain names that are almost identical to official sites with only a dot, dash, common misspelling, or different domain extension than the real site (usually .net or .biz instead of .com). They do their best to mimic the real site's layout, and they are targeting charity homepages as well as anti-virus and anti-spyware download sites.

So give that next website's address a close look before you leap, especially if you saw the link through an email or ad rather than a dependable source.

Tips & Tricks:     Highlighting Text

Question:  I have trouble controlling the mouse when I try to highlight text.  Do you have any helpful hints for me?

Answer:
Yes, you can use the insertion point (flashing vertical line) and the arrow keys.

Move the insertion point (click or use the arrow keys on the keyboard) to the point where you want to start highlighting the text.  Hold down the Shift key and press the Arrow key.  If you are highlighting a few words on the current line, use the right arrow key.  If you have several lines to highlight, press the down arrow key while holding down the Shift key.

If you have a very large selection to highlight, you can use the Page Up and Page Down keys.

Today's Topic:   Picture CDs

Question:  My son sent me a CD-ROM with photos on it.  I inserted the CD into my computer but nothing happens. What should I do?

Answer:
When you insert a CD into your CD-ROM drive, it will automatically open only if it has a file called autorun on it.  Your CD does not have the autorun file on it, so you will have to open it yourself.

Here are the steps:

Insert the CD in the drive.  Click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. If you do not have the My Computer icon, click the Start button and then My Computer.

A list will appear showing the drives on your computer.  You will have to find the ROM drive that has the disk in it.  Double click on it.

You will now see a window that will have either files or folders listed.  To open a file, double click on it.  It will open in your picture viewing program.  To open a folder, double click on it, and then double click on any file in that folder.

Question:   Remove Unwanted Symbols from Email

Friends send me emails that I would like to save, but I would like to remove all the greater than signs (>) from them.  Can I remove them without manually deleting each one?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Copy the email into Microsoft Word or Works Word Processor.  Click Edit on the menu and then Find.  This will open the Find and Replace window.

Click the Replace tab.   Type the greater than symbol into the Find what box.  Click in the Replace with box and type a space.  Click the Replace All button.

This will remove all the greater than signs and put a blank space there instead.

Question:  Skip the Recycle Bin

Can I delete a file and it is just deleted, without going into the Recycle Bin?

Answer:
Yes, you can.  Click once on the file.  Hold down the Shift key on the keyboard and press the Delete key.  The Confirm File Delete window will appear asking you if you are sure that you want to delete that file.  Click the Yes button.

Be careful with this command; the file is really gone now!
